Opportunity Forecast

According to the Global Education Apps Market – Market Study 2015 – 2019, the global education apps market will grow at a CAGR of 34.72% between 2014 and 2019. Charmonman et al. (2014) predict that more and more educational apps will be developed by educators and their students.  Companies, such as AppSheet and iBuildApp featured in the videos below, have already started to target educators as potential app developers.

In terms of market opportunities, Schuler (2012) conducted a content analysis of the Education category of Apple’s iTunes App Store.  He identified the following emerging opportunities:

  1. Apps for elementary aged children
    • Only 20% of the overall sample targeted this age
    • Almost 50% of the top 25 sellers targeted this age
  2. Developers targeting toddler/pre-school children should move beyond skill/drill and capitalize on the touch screen features of mobile devices
    • Apps for toddlers/pre-school were the most popular age category
  3. Developers should not default to the lowest price point
    • The average price of children’s apps rose by more than $1.00 between 2009 and 2012 but were still less expensive than apps targeting adults
